Roofing Contractor in Santa Barbara County

Santa Barbara County has eight cities, and they fall into two roofing climates: the South Coast around Santa Barbara, Goleta and Carpinteria, and the northern valleys around Santa Maria, Lompoc, Buellton, Solvang and Guadalupe. Two climate zones, two sets of rules

Santa Barbara, Goleta and Carpinteria are in building climate zone 6. On a reroof there, only low-slope roofs need a rated cool roof product.

Santa Maria, Lompoc, Buellton, Solvang and Guadalupe are in zone 5. The state reroof cool roof requirement does not apply in zone 5 to either steep-slope or low-slope roofs, so the choice of roof color and reflectance is open, subject to any local or HOA rules. We confirm the zone for each address on the Energy Commission’s map before ordering.

New fire zones, including Solvang

CAL FIRE released new Fire Hazard Severity Zone maps for the cities of Santa Barbara County in March 2025. Solvang, which had no hazard zones on the earlier map, now has areas rated Moderate, High and Very High. On the South Coast, homes near the foothills should check their address before ordering a new roof, because a Very High rating means a Class A roof.

Coast and valley wear

On the South Coast, salt air and marine fog work on nails and flashing. In the northern valleys, summer heat and wind are harder on underlayment and on shingle and tile fastening. We plan materials around those conditions, not around a single standard roof.

City building departments issue the permit

All eight communities on this page are incorporated cities, so the permit comes from the city’s building department.
