Asphalt Shingle Repair in LA County

Shingle roof repair fixes the part of an asphalt shingle roof that has failed: shingles lifted or torn off by wind, cracked or brittle shingles, popped nails, a split pipe boot, or loose ridge cap. In Los Angeles, that damage usually comes from Santa Ana winds and years of strong sun, and much of it can be fixed one section at a time.

Our shingle repair work covers single shingles, small sections, pipe boots, and ridge cap on homes across Los Angeles County. Shingle replacement in Los Angeles is usually a small job when the damage is caught early, and a larger one once water has been getting under the shingles long enough to soak the decking. When water is already coming inside, phone (877) 557-7778; that line is open 24/7.

What Fails on Asphalt Shingle Roofs in Los Angeles

In Southern California, asphalt shingle roof repair usually traces back to dry wind or strong sun. These are the problems a repair usually addresses:

Wind-lifted and creased shingles

Santa Ana winds are most common from October through March. A strong gust gets under the edge of a shingle and breaks the sealant bond that holds it flat. As the shingle flaps, it creases near the nail line. Manufacturers note that a broken bond is not likely to reseal to full strength on its own, so the next gust can tear the shingle off.

Granule loss and heat aging

The mineral granules on a shingle shield the asphalt from the sun. As a roof ages, the granules wash into the gutters and the asphalt dries out, usually starting on the slopes that get the most afternoon sun. Bald spots and piles of granules at the downspouts mean the shingles are wearing out.

Cracked, brittle, and curling shingles

Old shingles lose flexibility. They crack across the tabs, curl at the corners, or cup in the middle, and wind-driven rain gets under them.

Nail pops and exposed nails

A nail that backs out of the decking pushes up against the shingle above it and can wear through it. Exposed nails at the ridge, along flashing, or from old repairs rust and let water into the decking.

Pipe boots and ridge cap

A pipe boot is the flashing around a plumbing vent, sealed with a rubber collar that dries out and splits in the sun. A split boot is a frequent cause of leaks on shingle roofs. Ridge cap, the folded shingles along the peaks, takes the most wind and is often the first part of the roof to come loose.

How a Shingle Roof Repair Is Done

A good asphalt shingle repair is mostly careful lifting. Each shingle is held by its own nails and by the nails of the course above, which pass through its top edge, so a damaged shingle cannot come out without loosening its neighbors. The work goes in this order:

  1. Check the whole slope. Wind that tore off one shingle has often unsealed the ones beside it, so we check the full slope and photograph what we find.
  2. Break the seal on the course above. We separate the sealant strips slowly with a flat roofing bar so the shingles above do not crack or tear.
  3. Pull the nails and the damaged shingle. That includes the nails from the course above that pass through it.
  4. Slide in the new shingle and nail it. Nails go in the nailing zone the manufacturer marks, where the next course will cover them. The California Residential Code requires at least four nails per strip shingle, and more when the manufacturer’s instructions call for them.
  5. Hand-seal what was lifted. The shingles we unsealed, and any the wind unsealed, are sealed down with asphalt roofing cement so they lie flat again.
  6. Photograph the finished repair. You get photos of the damage and of the completed work.

Pipe boots and ridge cap follow the same rule: each layer laps over the one below so water keeps moving downhill. A new pipe boot slides under the shingles above it and over the shingles below. Each new ridge cap piece covers the nails of the one before it, and the last nail heads are sealed.

Some repairs go down to the roof deck. If a leak has soaked the plywood under the damaged area, we cut out the soft section and replace it before new underlayment and shingles go on.

Matching New Shingles to an Older Roof

Roof shingle replacement on an older roof raises a fair question: will the new shingles show? Even when the original color is still made, new shingles look darker and cleaner than shingles that have been in the sun for years. Some older colors and product lines are no longer made at all.

We bring samples to the roof and show you the closest current match before ordering. When the match is poor on a slope you see from the street, there are two other options. One is to move sound shingles from a less visible slope to the front and put the new ones in back. The other is to replace the shingles on the whole slope, so the color change falls at a ridge or hip instead of the middle of the roof.

Shingle type matters as much as color. A 3-tab shingle is a single flat layer cut into three tabs. An architectural shingle is two layers laminated together, so it is thicker and has an uneven, dimensional pattern. The two do not blend on the same slope, so a 3-tab roof gets 3-tab replacements. Our guide to architectural vs. 3-tab shingles explains the differences in more detail.

When a Shingle Repair Is No Longer Worth It

A shingle repair is the right call when the damage is limited and the shingles around it are still flexible. It stops making sense when:

  • The shingles are so brittle that lifting one course cracks the next
  • The granule loss, curling, or cracking shows up on most slopes, not just one
  • The roof has started leaking in several places in the same season
  • The decking feels soft underfoot or sags between the rafters
  • The shingle is discontinued and the damage is on a slope that faces the street

Decking damage is the hardest to judge from outside. On an Altadena shingle replacement, water had already reached the decking at the roof edge, and that decking was replaced before the new shingles went on. Our Whittier shingle job also included new plywood decking. New shingles will not fix rotted decking under them, so a leak that keeps returning at the roof edge deserves a closer look.

If your roof has reached that point, read signs you need roof repair vs. full replacement and see our roof replacement services. A completely new shingle roof is covered on our shingle roof installation and asphalt shingle roof installation pages.

Documenting Wind-Damaged Shingles for an Insurance Claim

If a Santa Ana wind event or a winter storm damaged your shingles, the claim is between you and your insurer. Read your policy, call your insurer to report the damage, and ask what it needs from you.

We provide the documentation: dated photos of each damaged area, notes on creased and unsealed shingles (creasing is a typical sign of a shingle flexing in the wind), and a written repair estimate you can send to your insurer. We can also be at your home when the adjuster comes, if you want us there. The claim itself stays with you; we never file, negotiate, or settle it. For representation, you can hire a public adjuster licensed by the California Department of Insurance.

The Department of Insurance advises photographing damage before cleanup, making reasonable temporary repairs to prevent more damage, and keeping receipts. Its Residential Property Claims Guide covers the full process. If the wind damaged more than the shingles, see our page on storm damage roof repair.

Shingle Repair and Shingle Replacement Questions

Can you replace missing shingles without redoing the whole roof?

Yes, in most cases. If the surrounding shingles are still flexible and the decking underneath is sound, we replace the missing pieces, reseal the shingles the wind loosened, and match the color as closely as current products allow. If the shingles crack when the course above is lifted, we show you photos and explain why a larger repair may be the better choice.

It depends on what the roof needs, so we price it after seeing the roof. The main factors are the number of shingles and slopes involved, the roof’s pitch and height, whether the original shingle is still made, and whether decking under the damaged area has to be replaced. A pipe boot or a few shingles is a small job. The estimate is free and in writing, so you know the price before we begin.

Usually because the sealant bond under the shingle has broken. Wind lifts the edge, the shingle flexes and creases, and the bond does not fully reset afterward. Shingles that were nailed too high, or that have aged and lost flexibility, let go sooner. Replacing torn shingles and hand-sealing the loosened ones around them before the rainy season lowers the chance that the next storm finds an opening.

A repair to a few shingles, a pipe boot, or a short run of ridge cap is usually done in one visit. It takes longer when a matching shingle has to be ordered, when decking under the damaged area has to be replaced, or when rain delays the work. Your written estimate includes the expected schedule.

It depends on the shingles, not only on their age. A sound roof with wind damage on one slope is usually worth repairing. A roof whose shingles crack when lifted, or that is losing granules and curling on most slopes, will keep developing new leaks, and repair money spent on it buys little time. We tell you which case you are in and can price both a repair and a replacement.
