Signs a Ridge Cap Needs Repair
Loose or missing ridge cap shingles
Wind lifts the cap shingles at the peak, breaks their seal, and can tear pieces off. Look for cap pieces in the yard or gutters after a Santa Ana wind event, or a ridge line that looks uneven. Exposed nail heads along the ridge are another sign, because water can follow a nail into the deck.
Cracked mortar and loose ridge tiles
On tile roofs, the mortar at the ridge cracks with age and movement, and ridge tiles can shift or slide. Open joints let wind-driven rain, birds, and rodents in. Because the underlayment under the tile, not the tile itself, is the waterproof layer, a damaged ridge can leak for a while before anything shows inside.
Stains along the center of a ceiling
A stain along the middle of a room, under the peak, often traces back to the ridge or a ridge vent. In the attic, look for dark staining or damp wood along the ridge board and the tops of the rafters, especially after a windy storm.
A damaged ridge vent
Ridge vents can crack, warp, or be crushed by foot traffic and falling limbs, and their filter material can clog with dust. A damaged vent lets wind-driven rain in through the open slot it covers, and the leak tends to show up in windy storms.
Ridge Cap Replacement for Loose or Missing Shingles
Ridge cap repair on a shingle roof can be a few pieces or the whole ridge. A short repair works when the damage is in one spot. Replace the full ridge when caps are cracked along their folds in many places, nails are backing out, or the ridge vent also needs replacing. During a ridge cap replacement, we:
- Remove the old caps and pull any loose nails
- Check the deck along the peak and replace soft or rotted wood
- Replace or reinstall the ridge vent, if there is one
- Install new hip and ridge shingles, starting opposite the prevailing wind, with the fasteners the manufacturer requires
- Seal any exposed nail heads on the last piece

Tile Ridge Reset: Re-Mortar or Mortarless Ridge
A tile ridge reset removes the ridge tiles, repairs what is underneath, and sets the tiles back. Sound ridge tiles can go back on, but the California Residential Code bars reinstalling tile that is cracked or broken, so those pieces are swapped for matching tile. The reset uses one of two methods:
- Re-mortar. The ridge tiles are bedded in fresh mortar over the ridge board, and the mortar fills the gaps at the sides. This keeps the traditional mortared look of Spanish and mission tile roofs.
- Mortarless ridge. The ridge tiles are fastened to a ridge board or metal ridge member and set with an approved adhesive or foam, with weather blocking under the sides. It can also be built as a vented ridge.

Ridge Vent Replacement
To replace a ridge vent, we remove the caps, the old vent, and any debris in the slot, then check the slot width and the deck edges. The new vent goes on with new cap shingles over it, because old caps usually crack when they are lifted.
A ridge vent needs intake vents low on the roof to work, and the California Residential Code ties the total vent area to the size of the attic, so we check the whole vent layout first. In a fire hazard severity zone that the Wildland-Urban Interface Code covers, a new attic vent has to meet its standard for resistance to embers and flame.
When Ridge Damage Is Part of a Bigger Problem
Wind that tears off ridge caps often loosens shingles or tiles elsewhere, and a ridge that has leaked for a while can leave rotted decking along the peak. We check both slopes, the hips, and the attic below before writing the estimate.

How do I know if my ridge cap is leaking?
Look for a ceiling stain along the middle of a room under the peak, damp or dark wood along the ridge board in the attic, or cap pieces in the yard after strong wind. A roofer can confirm the source by checking the caps, nails, and vent up close.
Is mortar or a mortarless ridge better on a tile roof?
Both are accepted methods in the Tile Roofing Institute’s manual. Mortar keeps the traditional look of Spanish and mission tile ridges. A mortarless ridge uses a ridge board, fasteners, and approved adhesive or foam, and it can be vented. We match the method to your tile, attic ventilation, and fire zone.
Will homeowners insurance pay for ridge cap replacement after wind damage?
